About Me – Why Austria?

My name is Grant Rommel, and I decided to study abroad during the fall of my junior year at Whitman College. As a history major, I’m particularly interested in medieval European history. I decided to go to Austria for a few reasons: I wanted to learn more about central European history and culture (obviously) and I wanted to be in a central location with easy access to transportation in any direction. I chose Austria over England and Spain because, although I am nearly fluent in Spanish, I feel that I could easily visit Western Europe later in life while on vacation. I’m hoping to update this blog pretty regularly, but don’t get mad if I slack off a bit as the semester goes on! I’m also hoping to avoid Facebook for the most part.

The program I am attending here in Vienna is called IES Vienna. IES is a Chicago-based institute that has campuses in cities all over the world. There are 125 American students from all across the states here, and 7 of us are from Whitman. The classes I will be taking are all at the IES center in an old palace in the central city (1st district).

I hope you enjoy my blog!
